Stress, especially chronic stress, produces several physical and mental symptoms that can include health decline and depression. Stress management refers to a spectrum of techniques and psychotherapies aimed at curbing stress levels, managing anxiety, and improving everyday functioning.
Many practical stress management techniques are available. Some are used by health professionals and others for self-help. This may help an individual reduce their stress levels, provide positive feelings of control and promote general well-being.
Evaluating the effectiveness of various stress management techniques can be difficult, as limited research currently exists. Consequently, the amount and quality of evidence for the various techniques vary widely. Some are accepted as effective treatments for use in psychotherapy, while others with less evidence are considered alternative therapies. Many professional organizations provide training in conventional or alternative therapies.
