Preventing cardiovascular disease

Current recommendations to help prevent cardiovascular disease include:

  • Eating a low-fat, high-fiber diet full of whole grains, fruits and vegetables
  • Stopping smoking and avoiding secondhand smoke
  • Limiting alcohol consumption to 1 to 2 drinks per day
  • Lowering elevated blood pressures
  • If overweight or obese, losing body fat
  • Getting 30 minutes of exercise per day, at least five times per week
  • Limiting sugar consumption
  • Managing stress
